Culebra, which means "Snake," is the name given to this Homiegirl. When she was younger, she and some of the other Homiegirls were playing at a construction site in the suburbs. While flipping over a piece of plywood, they discovered a rattlesnake hiding underneath. Before anyone could react, the snake bit Culebra multiple times. A construction worker quickly intervened, killing the snake with a shovel. In that intense moment, the spirit of the snake entered Culebra’s soul, becoming a part of her. She fell into a deep, delirious coma for weeks until a Shaman—a Native American spiritual healer—revived her. Since then, Culebra has gained the ability to have visions, see into the future, and interpret dreams. As a Native American girl, these kinds of supernatural experiences are deeply rooted in her cultural traditions and legends.
